China Telecom maintains strong edge over rivalsPublished: 20 Aug 2009 10:02:02 PSTBy Li Qiaoyi China Telecom, the country’s third-largest telecom operator in terms of net profit, maintained its edge over its two rivals by gaining more mobile subscribers in July, data released yesterday showed.China Telecom reported a net gain of 2.45 million CDMA subscribers in July, the biggest growth this year, a increase of 80,000 subscribers, or 3.38 percent, over the previous month.The company has enjoyed a regular monthly increase in mobile subscribers during the first seven months of 2009.By contrast, China Mobile, the country’s largest telecom operator, posted a sharp decline in subscriber expansion last month.China Mobile reported a net increase of 4.55 million mobile subscribers last month, the lowest increase this year. The figure represents a drop of 466,000 over the previous month.The number of 3G network customers increased by 129,000 in July, while in June, the figure increased by 213,000.China Unicom, the second largest telecom operator, said its mobile subscribers only increased by 680,000 in July, down 182,000 compared with the previous month.China Unicom also reported the lowest increase this year.
